[Locked from Greg]

Greg's birthday is on the 5th. Just a heads up for anyone who wants to get him something. Or drag him away from work. Just do somethin' for the guy. He deserves it.

So. Engagement ring. Who wants to help me look for a good one? Or at least give me a good idea of what to get.

Cause, yeah... me? No good at this stuff.

Umm, do you have any ideas about what he might like for his birthday?

When it comes to an engagement ring, the standard fare is 24 karat Gold and a single diamond.

Don't do the standard. She'll be impressed by it, but it won't stand out. Show a little creativity, and commission the ring especially for her to truly dazzle her if she does any dwelling on it. (Here's a hint. You want her to dwell on it.)

White Gold is a common substitute and often highly desireable, but be careful about whether or not she'll have an allergy to the alloy.

Rose gold is of slightly lesser quality due to the complexity of the alloy, but when I want to woo a woman with expensive tastes, that's how I go. The coloration is very rarely seen.

When it comes to gemstones, stick with a diamond. The standard is a solitaire oval or marquis-cut. You can alternate with a smaller, three-stone ring, but size is generally important here. One large stone will be better than three smaller ones, even if the smaller stones are more expensive in the end.

My recommendation, a trillion-cut solitaire diamond set in rose gold, whatever you can afford. Remember that the wedding band itself will cost more, so don't bankrupt yourself on this one. You want it different enough to impress, but otherwise take a minimalist approach. Save the fancy stones and settings for the wedding ring.
