You might not use it much, but if you ever do have to resort to it then at least you'll know some basics. You'd be surprised at how much they can help you not hurt yourself in a fight, even if you don't technically know the kata.
Besides, having a big-ass sword is like having a big-ass gun: it's intimidating. As long as you look as if you know what you're doing, you might be able to scare opponents off before you actually need to swing the thing around. If you don't know how to at least hold it properly, trust me, they'll know.
